Homemade ice is generally made from tap water and contains impurities and even odors and tastes from foods stored in the freezer. That is why homemade ice is cloudy and sometimes has a 'taste' to it. Delta Ice is filtered and produced by the strictest standards and sanitary conditions. Fresh water runs over stainless steel refrigerated plates, thereby keeping impurities from the ice and making it crystal  clear. That's why we proudly say "We have no taste."

To ensure that our water source meets our quality standards, ice and water samples are sent monthly to testing laboratories and tested for contaminants. Our ice making facility is licensed by and therefore subject to inspection by the State Health Department.

What should you look for when  buying ice?

First and foremost, remember that ICE IS FOOD!  You should look for ice that is crystal clear, odorless and tasteless. When purchasing ice, watch for bags that are sealed properly and completely (no drawstring or hand applied ties). The manufacturer's name and addres where produced should also be printed on the bag, as is required by Health Department Regulations.

AVOID ICE THAT IS PACKAGED BY HAND  OR SERVED BY USING HAND SCOOPS, CUPS, OR BUCKETS!

This process is unsanitary by its very nature, even if it comes out of a vending machine. Germs and hundreds of potentially hazardous bacteria and contaminants lurk in open containers and on hands, clothing or scoops and buckets. Look for ice produced and handled by sanitary means.  Here are just a few of the questions you should ask yourself when buying ice:

1.  Has the  server washed his or her hands IMMEDIATELY before getting your ice or the container it is served in?
2.  Are the container(s) sanitized?
3.  Has the scoop or bucket fallen on the floor or been exposed to splashing from nearby sinks, food prep surfaces, or MOP WATER?
4.  Has the equipment used to make or handle the ice been recently inspected and sanitized?
5.  Is the handler or server sick?

Our icemaking and handling processes are automated and inspected and sanitized regularly.  Vulnerability of exposure to unhealthy contaminants is greatly minimized by our methods of manufacturing and handling our products.
